This debut feature film from Paul Morrison was a project that was pitched to me at a very early stage, almost on the back of an envelope, and we developed it and produced the story from scratch with the backing and support of S4C and the English and Welsh lottery funds. The story, an original work of fiction based around selected historical events that took place within both Welsh and Jewish communities at the turn of the 20th century, during a time of anti-Semitic riots and poverty, was shot in English, Welsh and Yiddish. Starring Nia Roberts, Ioan Gruffudds and Maureen Lipman, it was nominated for an Oscar in the ‘Best Film in a Foreign Language’ category (2000), and recently enjoyed a successful nationwide tour to celebrate 20 years.
